If one succeeds in a passport battle, following are the messages displayed in their status' -
- Police Report is clear and the passport is expected to be despatched by 02-07-2006. Subject to all documents being in order.
- Passport was ready on 26-06-2006.
- Passport has been dispatched by post on 19-04-2006 vide postal Registration Number F9841
- It is to regret that due to unavoidable circumstances the dispatch of Passport has been delayed and will now be dispatched in a week's time.
But, if you are among the unlucky ones, following dry status messages mock you in the eye:
- Police Report has not been received.
- Please contact PRO for details
- Police Report is incomplete and the case is being examined
- Your police report was incomplete. It is therefore returned to the concerned police authority for completion of report.
- Police Report is adverse, a show-cause notice is being sent by Post
- Please furnish newspaper cuttings from two different newspapers about change of name together with deed poll, as per Annexure "A" of instructions attached to the application form, executed on non-judicial stamp paper before a Magistrate or a Notary Public (with name stamp and registration number of the document in case of attestation by Notary Public).
- Please furnish attested copy of school certificate/ Birth certificate in proof of date and place of birth. In case of illiterates or loss of document of date of birth, an affidavit, as per annexure "F" of the instructions attached to the application Form, may be furnished duly attested by a Magistrate or a Notary Public (with name stamp and registration No. of document in case of attestation by a Notary Public).
These are the ones I found, there may be many others.
It takes a minimum of One month to get a passport, my application has taken over 16 months and is still pending. There is absolutely no action/control/effort on the side of Passport office to try and close it. They will not move an inch on their own.

Update - 30-Jun-08 - Removed some personal rants. Passport process is much better now, lots of improvements (RTI, better online information etc.). This is more because of huge increase in number of passport applications. The older procedure just didn't scale. I have finally got my passport. It just tool 35 months - luckily they hadn't closed my application .
