Carpe Diem

Carpe Diem

Gather ye rose-buds while ye may,Old Time is still a-flying;And this same flower that smiles today, Tomorrow will be dying.
Robert Herrick, To the Virgins, to Make Much of Time
English lyric poet (1591 - 1674)

"Gather ye rosebuds, while ye may" - The latin term for that sentiment is "Carpe Diem"

Carpe Diem - Simply meaning - Seize the day

Following lines are from a scene in movie "Dead Poets Society" --

" Gather ye rose-buds while ye may, Old Time is still a-flying; And this same flower that smiles today, Tomorrow will be dying.......Why does the author use these lines?...No.Because we are food for worms lads. Because believe it or not, each and everyone of us in this room, one day is going stop breathing, turn cold and die.
I would like you to step forward to this way over here. And see some of the faces from the past. You have walked past them many times, but I don't think you have looked that much.
They are not that different from you, are they. Same haircut, full of hormones just like you. Invincible, just like you feel. The world is their oyster. They believe they are destined for great things, just like many of you. Their eyes are full of hope, just like you.
Did they wait till it was too late to make from their lives even one iota of what they were capable, because you see gentleman, these boys are now ferrtilising daffodils.
If you listen real close, you can hear them whisper their legacy to you. Go on lean in. Listen, do you hear it. Carpe .. hear it .. Carpe Carpe Diem, seize the day boys. Make your lives extraordinary."
If the above lines are not reason enough to watch, DPS, nothing is. DPS transcends any regular regular run of the mill stories. It showcases a simple yet path breaking teaching style of Robin Williams (Mr. Keating). Keating regularly breaks the traditional teaching patterns and inspires his students to find thier own meaning of life and what to make out of it. "

"Did they wait till it was too late to make from their lives even one iota of what they were capable ..."

Rangs any bells!
